Parenthood is full of decisions — big ones, small ones, and everything in between. Choosing how to feed your baby is one of the biggest. And no matter which path you’re on, you deserve to feel supported and confident.

It can feel overwhelming to read news like the recent Consumer Reports study, which found that about half of the powdered infant formulas they tested contained concerning levels of contaminants like lead, arsenic, and PFAS.

We get it. It's scary!

And it's okay to feel rattled for a minute.

But here's the truth we think you need to hear: you are already doing an amazing job.

You care. You’re showing up. And there are simple steps you can take to stay proactive and keep your baby safe.

A Quick Look at What the Study Said

Consumer Reports tested 41 powdered baby formulas and found:

  • Some formulas had detectable levels of heavy metals (lead, arsenic, cadmium, mercury)

  • Others contained chemicals like acrylamide and PFAS

  • Long-term exposure to these can impact babies’ health, even though no immediate risks were identified for healthy babies currently using these formulas.

The Baby Formula News and What the Consumer Report Says Is Best

According to the recent Consumer Reports investigation, several baby formulas were identified as having little to no detectable levels of harmful contaminants like lead and arsenic. Among the safest options highlighted in the study are:

  1. Enfamil Gentlease- This formula is designed to ease fussiness and gas and was among the 21 formulas tested with minimal or no detectable heavy metals.

  2. Similac Advance- A widely used formula that also ranked among the safer choices with low contaminant levels.

  3. Kirkland Signature ProCare (Costco)- Costco’s store-brand formula, manufactured by Perrigo, was noted for its low levels of heavy metals.

These formulas were part of the 21 out of 41 tested that showed little to no detectable heavy metals, indicating that safer options are available on the market. It's important to note that while these formulas were identified as having lower levels of contaminants, parents should always do their own research and consult with their pediatrician to determine the best formula option for their baby's specific needs.

The bottom line?

Most babies will be just fine — and with a few easy changes, you can lower risks even more.

How You Can Take Action About This Baby Formula News — Without Losing Sleep

You don’t have to panic. You just need to stay informed and make small adjustments where you can:

1. Choose Trusted Brands

Look for companies that are transparent about their safety testing.

2. Use Safe Water for Mixing

Tap water can sometimes contain lead or other contaminants. If you're unsure, use bottled water labeled safe for infants or invest in a quality water filter.

3. Store and Handle Formula Carefully

Keep formula sealed, dry, and stored at the right temperature. Always follow mixing instructions exactly — babies’ bodies are sensitive to concentrations.

4. Give Yourself Grace

Information will always keep evolving. You are allowed to pivot, learn, and adapt — and that doesn’t mean you’ve made mistakes. It means you are a fantastic parent. If anyone failed or should be held accountable it's the formula companies.

The best news for parents?

"Aside from the most concerning results for arsenic, lead, BPA, and acrylamide, our tests found that there are still many safer infant formula options widely available on the market."-Consumer Reports
